ROLEX STEPS BACK IN TIME AT MONTEREY CLASSIC CAR WEEK

Geneva, 15 June 2016 – Rolex’s links to motor racing and speed reach back to the 1930s when Sir Malcolm Campbell broke the 300-mile per hour barrier at the wheel of his World Land Speed Record car, Bluebird, with a Rolex on his wrist. Rolex has since maintained a global appreciation for the past and its traditions, epitomized by the Monterey Classic Car Week. This year’s event, running from Thursday 18 August until Sunday 21 August 2016, will showcase motor sport’s constant evolution through time with a unique combination of concours, tours, racing and auctions.

Set on California’s spectacular Monterey Peninsula, the Monterey Classic Car Week transforms the region into a hub of vintage automobile excellence. Rolex has been deeply involved with this exclusive event since 1997, given its shared values of tradition and innovation, which have shaped quality watchmaking as much as the automotive world. Rolex is involved with several events during the week: Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance® presented by Rolex; The Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion; The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering; and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®. These events are linked by a common theme: a passion for and dedication to preserving the history and tradition of classic cars that are no less exceptional today than when they were first created. Each event, in its own unique way, celebrates motor sport past and present.

ROLEX STEPS BACK IN TIME AT MONTEREY CLASSIC CAR WEEK

Over the course of the week, event-goers relive the Golden Age of motor racing, sharing their enthusiasm for the history of the automobile. Stepping back in time, they reflect on the inventiveness and creativity of the designers and manufacturers and celebrate the style and beauty of a bygone era, as well as the sport’s heroes, including long-term Rolex Testimonee, three-time FIA Formula One Drivers’ World Champion, and former guest of honour at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, Sir Jackie Stewart.

Sir Jackie Stewart’s description of the the cars displayed at Pebble Beach and at the Monterey Peninsula perfectly reflects Rolex’s values: “The elegance and splendor of the cars that race, as well as those on show throughout the event, represent the ultimate in motor sport aesthetics. PEBBLE BEACH TOUR D’ELEGANCE PRESENTED BY ROLEX

For Rolex, the Monterey Classic Car Week gets underway with the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex. This feature, introduced in 1998 and partnered by Rolex since 2007, showcases the elegance of the automobile in motion. The traditional Tour, which starts from The Lodge at Pebble Beach, traces portions of the original 17-Mile Drive®, traverses nearby mountains and valleys, and pauses in the charming town of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

ROLEX MONTEREY MOTORPORTS REUNION

THURSDAY 18 – SUNDAY 21 AUGUST 2016

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is the largest event during the Monterey Classic Car Week and is staged at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the scene of America’s golden years of sports car racing since it opened in 1957. The event relives motor sport history with robust racing at the iconic and demanding circuit. Rolex partnered the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, which took place at the same venue between 2001 and 2009, before becoming Title Sponsor of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in 2010.

THE QUAIL, A MOTORSPORTS GATHERING

Rolex has been the Official Timepiece of The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering since 2005. It is the crown jewel in a whirlwind of events over the Monterey Classic Car Week and is reminiscent of the earlier, more intimate days of the Concours. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Santa Lucia mountain range, the event combines elegance with exceptional vintage sporting automobiles and a true culinary experience.  

PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE

Rolex has been the Official Timepiece of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and partner to The Lodge at Pebble Beach since 1997. The Concours, a contest of elegance rather than speed, marks the culmination of the Monterey Classic Car Week. Judged for their historical accuracy, technical merit and style, two hundred of the most prized automobiles and motorcycles in the world roll onto the 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links®, hoping to claim the Best of Show Trophy, the most coveted award amongst car collectors globally.
